A study has shown that Triangle push ups (these are the push up where you have your thumbs and index fingers touching, creating a triangle) are the exercise that showed the highest level of activation within the Triceps, Followed by dumbbell kickbacks and bench dips.
Push-downs, overhead extension and similar exercises didn’t show in the top 3 due to the fact it is easier to Cheat OR incorporate other muscles groups when doing such exercises.
The isolation of the Triceps in the 3 named exercises is all well and good but, for overall development of the Triceps, it is felt that exercises like the close grip bench press which allow more weight to be used making them essential.
